HD Hyundai Heavy Secures Taean Offshore Substation Contract

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has secured a contract to build an offshore substation for the Taean offshore wind farm. The company finalised the agreement on Friday with Taean Wind Power, a joint venture comprising Singapore-based renewable energy developer Vena Energy, Danish investment firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, and Korea Western Power.

The deal encompasses engineering, procurement, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning services. Won Kwang-shik, head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Offshore Energy Business Division, and Clement Helbig de Balzac, CEO of the Taean Wind Power project, attended the signing ceremony.

Project Scope and Development Timeline

The new offshore substation will increase the voltage of electricity produced by turbines at the 500-megawatt wind farm, located near Gaeuido-ri in Taean, South Chungcheong Province, before it is transmitted to the mainland. This latest agreement follows a preliminary design contract signed in March, and a preferred supplier agreement reached in July.

The two parties concluded the main contract after detailed discussions over recent months, marking a significant step in the project's development.

Certified Design Bolsters Company's Offering

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has also completed the certification process for its proprietary offshore substation model. Norwegian classification society DNV verified the basic design in 2025, followed by the detailed design in August.

This achievement marks the first time a domestic offshore substation design has received both international verifications under global regulations and standards. The company plans to apply its extensive expertise in offshore plant construction to this wind power project.

Why it matters

The Taean project positions HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to expand its footprint in the renewable energy infrastructure sector. An official from the company stated their intention to leverage accumulated offshore plant expertise for the Taean development and to seek out new opportunities in renewable energy, strengthening their market competitiveness.

The shipbuilder also plans to explore additional projects in Korea currently being developed by the Taean Wind Power partners: Vena Energy, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, and Korea Western Power, indicating potential for further collaboration in the growing offshore wind market.
